All three pitchers were drafted out of college, with Sadler just having completed his sophomore season at Western Oklahoma State College. He went 10-1 with a 3.12 ERA in 17 games (15 starts). In 74 innings, Sadler compiled 81 strikeouts.
Townsend was a junior at the University of Alabama last year and finished with 36 strikeouts in 36 innings (21 appearances). He had transferred to Alabama after spending two years at Chipola (Fla.) Junior College. Archibald went 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 27 innings for McLennan (Texas) Community College.
Though Pittsburgh has now inked 14 picks, the organization has signed just one player drafted in the first 11 rounds. The deadline to sign players from the First-Year Player Draft is midnight on Aug. 16.
