KANSAS CITY -- Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura, the Opening Day starter on Monday, is relieved and grateful, he said, to have signed a five-year contract with $23 million guaranteed on Saturday.
Ventura spoke for the first time Sunday since signing the deal, which includes two team options in 2020 and 2021.
"I am very grateful to be healthy and in this position to sign the contract," he said through translator Jeremy Guthrie. "I'm very grateful to the Glass family, not only for this contract but for the one I signed when I was 17. I'm very grateful for the confidence they have in me to give me this contract."
Ventura said he is most excited for his family back in the Dominican Republic.
"It has a lot to do with my family and the ability to help out my whole family now," he said.
