Britton clears waivers, assigned to Triple-A

PHOENIX -- Left-handed reliever Drake Britton cleared waivers on Friday and was assigned to Triple-A Iowa, opening a spot on the Cubs' 40-man roster.

With the move, the Cubs bullpen for Opening Night will include lefty Phil Coke and right-handers Justin Grimm, Jason Motte, Neil Ramirez, Hector Rondon and Pedro Strop. Edwin Jackson will be in the 'pen also as a long man.

Britton was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox in early February. In nine Cactus League games, Britton gave up three earned runs on eight hits and four walks over 8 1/3 innings.

With the open spot on the 40-man, the Cubs could add infielder Jonathan Herrera, who was a non-roster invitee this spring.
