Yankees make trade, acquire infielder Petit from Astros

The Yankees acquired infielder Gregorio Petit from the Astros on Wednesday in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations.

Petit hit .278 in 37 games for the Astros last season. He was having a productive spring, batting .310 (9-for-29) through 18 Grapefruit League contests, but was unable to crack the club's crowded infield. He was among several players sent to the Minors on Sunday.

The 30-year-old Venezuelan is joining his fifth Major League organization since he signed with the Athletics as a free agent in 2001. He also made brief appearances in the big leagues with the A's in 2008 and '09.

Through 62 career games in the Majors, Petit owns a .278 average (42-for-151) with two homers and 10 RBIs.
