Phillies implement enhanced security measures: Walk-through metal detectors now at Citizens Bank Park

All fans for 2015 season required to walk through metals detectors, starting with On-Deck Series

For the first time, fans entering Citizens Bank Park in 2015 for Phillies games, concerts and other major events will be required to use walk-through metal detectors immediately before their tickets are scanned.

The enhanced security measures are being implemented after a successful metal detector pilot program was held at the end of last season at Citizens Bank Park, where fans entering the Right Field Gate were required to walk through metal detectors. Now, all guests will be expected to walk through metal detectors at all entrance gates, starting with the Phillies On-Deck Series, April 3-4.

The added security is part of a Major League Baseball mandate that all fans are subject to metal detection screening. The new metal detectors were installed during the offseason, a process which took approximately five weeks.

"The safety of our guests has always been one of the Phillies' top priorities," said Sal DeAngelis, Phillies Director of Operations/Security. "The addition of metal detectors is the next step in advanced security measures at Citizens Bank Park."

With the enhanced security measures, guests are encouraged to allow for extra time when entering Citizens Bank Park. Unlike the standard procedures of the Transportation Security Administration, fans will not be required to remove shoes or belts. Those who cannot pass through a metal detector will be checked with a hand-held device.

"We believe this increased security can be accomplished with very little inconvenience to our fans," said DeAngelis.

All cell phones, cameras, keys and other large metal items will need to be removed prior to passing through the metal detectors. Guests will place these items in a screening bowl alongside each individual machine in close proximity and in clear sight. Once through the metal detector, fans can easily and quickly gather their items and proceed inside the ballpark.

These new procedures are in addition to bag checks, which are already in place in accordance with Major League Baseball security regulations. As before, bags must be no larger than 16" x 16" x 8."
