JUPITER, Fla. -- The Cardinals whittled down their list of bench candidates by reassigning four position players from Major League camp following Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Mets.
Catcher Ed Easley, infielder Dean Anna and first baseman Xavier Scruggs were optioned to Triple-A, while infielder Jacob Wilson, a non-roster invitee, was reassigned to the Minors. He, too, is expected to begin the season with Memphis.
Wilson posted one of the better springs by a non-roster player, finishing 10-for-32 with four doubles, one homer and four RBIs. He'll join Scruggs (5-for-27) and Anna (4-for-20) in the Memphis infield. Easley (3-for-15) and Michael Ohlman will provide catching depth at the Triple-A level.
Sunday's moves leave the Cardinals with 33 players left in camp and just a few moves away from solidifying the 13 or 14 position players that will begin the season on the big-league roster. In addition to the 11 position players who entered Spring Training with a firm grip on a Major League job, still remaining are Pete Kozma, Ty Kelly, Randal Grichuk, Tommy Pham, Scott Moore and Stephen Piscotty.
Kozma and Grichuk have emerged as favorites to round out the Cardinals' bench. Kelly has also impressed the staff this spring with his versatility and plate discipline.
