Ventura to scale back pitches in spring finale

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Royals Opening Day starter Yordano Ventura will have one more Spring Training start after Friday night.

Manager Ned Yost said Ventura, who was scheduled to throw 90-95 pitches against the Mariners on Friday, will be backed down to about 60-65 pitches on Wednesday against the Dodgers in the final Cactus League game in Arizona.

Left-handers Danny Duffy and Jason Vargas, and right-handers Edinson Volquez and Jeremy Guthrie, all will throw 90-95 pitches in their next starts before being backed down to 60-65 in their final tune-ups before the regular season.

Duffy will stay in Arizona on Thursday when the rest of the team travels to Houston for exhibition games on Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4. Duffy will throw a simulated game here in Surprise.

Volquez and Vargas are scheduled to start in Houston, while Guthrie likely will throw a simulated game in Kansas City on Sunday, April 5, a day before the regular season opener.
