Ventura, Herrera get work in behind the scenes

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Two of the Royals' most important pitchers got their work done behind the scenes Saturday, but both took solid steps toward the opening of the regular season.

Starter Yordano Ventura and reliever Kelvin Herrera pitched against Minor Leaguers on a back field at the club's spring complex in Surprise and did what the team expected with no setbacks.

Ventura got his pitch count up to 85 while throwing five innings. He gave up one run on four hits while striking out six and walking three.

Herrera was perfect in an inning of work, striking out two.
