VIERA, Fla. -- Both starting pitchers, Washington's Gio Gonzalez and Detroit's Anibal Sanchez, turned in stellar starts during Thursday's game between the Nationals and Tigers at Space Coast Stadium, which ended in a 0-0 tie in 10 innings.
Sanchez, who was making his fourth start in the Grapefruit League, stifled the Nationals' offense through five innings. He surrendered just two hits and no walks and struck out six.
Sanchez had struggled a bit through his three previous starts, allowing six runs on nine hits in 8 1/3 innings.
Meanwhile, Gonzalez was just as sharp, holding the Tigers to two hits and a walk and striking out five in four innings. He's finally healthy after battling injuries throughout the past two seasons.
"There's a lot to be excited [about, a] lot to learn from this, but the most I'm taking out of this is how my arm feels," Gonzalez said. "It feels fantastic. I'm so excited about it."
Up Next: Max Scherzer is scheduled to make his fourth Grapefruit League start of the spring Friday when the Nationals face the Astros at Osceola County Stadium at 1:05 p.m. ET. This marks Scherzer's second straight start against Houston; he allowed one hit in four scoreless innings during Sunday's game. He is expected to go five or six innings or approximately 75 pitches.
