Matusz gets chance to start on Friday vs. Red Sox

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Brian Matusz will make his second start this spring for the Orioles on Friday.

Kevin Gausman and Wei-Yin Chen will pitch in separate Minor League games instead of facing the Red Sox on the road.

Manager Buck Showalter said that's the way pitching coach Dave Wallace wants to do it. The Minor League game presents a better option to "manage the innings, manage the pitch count and get them up to where they need to be."

For Matusz, who will be part of the team's Opening Day bullpen, starting gives him an opportunity to work on his changeup. The O's did a similar thing with him last spring.

Ubaldo Jimenez will take an extra rest day and start on Tuesday against the Pirates.

Jimenez's turn falls on Monday's off-day, and the Orioles would rather have him stay on track in big league camp and not throw in a Minor League game that day.
