Well-rounded effort from Kazmir, bats tops Padres

MESA, Ariz. -- Scott Kazmir struck out six and Ben Zobrist and Tyler Ladendorf each hit a three-run home run, leading the A's over the Padres, 13-2, on Tuesday at Hohokam Stadium.

Brett Lawrie doubled twice and Oakland scored five runs in the sixth inning.

Kazmir gave up three hits and two walks in his first spring appearance, on March 12, but allowed only a two-out single to Clint Barmes in the second. He struck out two in the first, two in the second and one each in the third and fourth before he left after four shutout innings.

Padres right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne gave up two runs on six hits in four innings, and Matt Wisler was roughed up for eight runs -- seven earned -- in the sixth.

San Diego got on the board in the top of the seventh, when Tommy Medica hit his second homer of the spring, a two-run shot.

Up next: Left-hander Drew Pomeranz will look to continue his strong spring when the A's face the Mariners at Peoria Sports Complex on Wednesday at 1:05 p.m. PT. Pomeranz has a 1.80 ERA and 10 strikeouts in five innings. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez will start for Seattle.
