PEORIA, Ariz. -- Brewers right fielder Ryan Braun was a last-minute scratch from Friday's game against the Mariners with flu-like symptoms, according to the club.
Carlos Gomez took over for Braun in the three-hole, and Matt Clark earned an unexpected start as a result of a lineup shuffle that delayed Braun's bid for his first hit of the spring. In four Cactus League games, he's 0-for-7 with two walks and two strikeouts.
Illness has been running throughout the Brewers' clubhouse of late, with starting pitcher Wily Peralta and manager Ron Roenicke among those battling an ailment similar to Braun's.
"We were going try to get [Braun] a couple of at-bats, but he said he couldn't go," Roenicke said. "I know one thing: I wouldn't have felt like playing today."
