GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Derek Holland is unlikely to start on Opening Day, but there is a chance he could be ready for the Rangers' home opener.
"I think it would be a push to say that Derek would be ready for games one, two or three," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said Wednesday. "I wouldn't want to push that envelope, personally. ... We want to get him ready for whenever his season starts."
Holland, recovering from shoulder soreness, threw a bullpen session Wednesday and is targeting Saturday as the day he makes his Cactus League debut.
General manager Jon Daniels said Holland "felt good" after the bullpen session, but the team wants to see how the 28-year-old left-hander feels in the next few days before making any firm decisions.
"When he's ready and capable, if that's the home opener, he will pitch," Banister said.
