Vogt set to make first start behind plate Monday

MESA, Ariz. -- A's backstop Stephen Vogt has been cleared to catch, and he will make his first spring start behind the plate in a road meeting against the Rangers on Monday, according to manager Bob Melvin.

For weeks, the A's thought they would have to ease Vogt into games at designated hitter to limit his time on his surgically repaired right foot. But he got the green light Saturday, allowing him to catch in a game for the first time since July 7 of last year.

Vogt spent much of the remaining weeks of the 2014 season at first base because of the right foot issue, and he ultimately underwent surgery to repair a plantar plate tear in the foot in October.

Vogt will catch rotation candidate Jesse Hahn on Monday in Surprise.
