Alou joining father at All-Star Game

SAN DIEGO -- It was a great 39th birthday present for Giants outfielder Moises Alou -- his sixth All-Star berth.

Alou, the lone San Francisco representative, will join his father, Giants manager Felipe Alou, at the 76th Midsummer Classic at Detroit's Comerica Park on July 12.

The elder Alou, 70, will be serving as a National League coach. He was the NL skipper for the 1994 contest, but this is his first duty as a Midsummer Classic coach.

"Everybody wants to go to the All-Star Game, and it means a lot for me because it's my sixth and and five with different teams," said Moises Alou. "It means that everywhere I go I do a decent job.

"I was pulling for other guys [shortstop Omar Vizquel and catcher Mike Matheny among them], but I was the chosen one. I'm thankful, proud and happy about it."

Joining his dad at Detroit will be cool, said Alou, who'll take a commercial flight from San Francisco late next Sunday following the night game vs. St. Louis at SBC Park.

"Sitting in the same dugout at the All-Star game," mused Alou, cheerful at the thought of his father being there. "I've always enjoyed playing for my dad. It'll be cool playing Little League, then at an All-Star Game in the big leagues -- it's special."

Felipe Alou said he was glad Moises made the select team, but was disappointed other Giants didn't make it.

"He's a .300 hitter and playing good in the outfield," said the senior Alou.

Despite an early injury and sickness, Moises Alou is fifth in the National League with a .323 average and ranks second in the Major Leagues by hitting .403 in day games. He leads San Francisco with 12 homers and is second with 39 RBIs.

The 15-year veteran was an All-Star as well in 1994 with Montreal, also won the honor with Florida in 1997, with Houston in 1998 and 2001 and last season with the Chicago Cubs.

He has done well in the contests, batting .444 with four hits and one RBI in nine at-bats.

Alou long wished to rejoin his father after playing under him at Montreal and got his wish this season. He was expected to bat behind slugger Barry Bonds, but became the club's offensive leader instead with Bonds injured.

Alou is a lifetime .300 hitter with 290 career homers.

The All-Star Game will start at 5 p.m. PT and be televised nationally by FOX Sports and televised around the world by Major League Baseball International.

ESPN Radio will provide exclusive, national radio coverage, while MLB.com will provide extensive online coverage and MLB Radio will provide exclusive play-by-play coverage of the game on the Internet.
