MESA, Ariz. -- A's rotation leaders Sonny Gray and Scott Kazmir, held out of the first week of exhibition games to get some extra rest, are scheduled to make their Cactus League debuts next week.
Gray is on tap for a home start against the D-backs at 1:05 p.m. PT on Tuesday, and the left-handed Kazmir is slated to take the mound at Hohokam Stadium two days later for a Thursday meeting against the Mariners at 12 p.m.
Both have been busy in the meantime. Kazmir, who totaled his most innings last year (190 1/3) since 2007, threw to teammates in a simulated game Wednesday, and Gray did the same on Thursday.
The right-handed Gray remains a safe bet to start Opening Day again after he compiled a team-high 219 innings last year, his first full season in the big leagues.
• Catcher Josh Phegley, who has been away from the team for several days this week for the birth of his daughter, Stella Grace, is expected back in camp Friday for a start behind the plate against the D-backs.
• Stephen Vogt, who is being eased into activity this spring following offseason surgery on his right foot, said Thursday he expects to make his Cactus League debut sometime next week, so long as he continues progressing at such an encouraging pace. The catcher won't be seen behind the plate right away, though. Look for him at designated hitter as he slowly works his way back into game action.
