LAKELAND, Fla. -- While the Tigers readied for their Grapefruit League opener against the Orioles on Tuesday, relievers Joakim Soria, Bruce Rondon and Joba Chamberlain all threw live batting practice on one of the practice fields behind Joker Marchant Stadium.
The three relievers all are behind game action for different reasons. The Tigers are progressing slowly with the hard-throwing Rondon, who is working back from Tommy John surgery. Chamberlain is catching up after joining camp last week.
Soria is healthy, he and the Tigers confirmed. He's catching up after throwing an extra side session last weekend by his choice.
"That's how he wanted to do it," manager Brad Ausmus said. "He threw another bullpen while everyone else threw live BP."
Soria said he believes he's slated to pitch his first game Sunday against the Astros.
