Flynn surprised to be issued Shields' old number

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Left-hander Brian Flynn didn't ask for uniform No. 33.

"I was surprised when they gave it to me," Flynn said, adding that he knew right away that it was James Shields' old number.

"Those are some big shoes to fill."

Flynn had worn No. 35 with the Marlins -- that number already belongs to Eric Hosmer.

"I guess it's as close to 35 as they could get," Flynn said. "But yeah, I've been reminded a few times who it belonged to."

Flynn was acquired last fall in the trade that sent Aaron Crow to the Marlins.

Flynn likely is targeted for Triple-A Omaha as a starter -- he's only had one relief appearance as a professional.

"I'm low maintenance, though," he said. "Whatever they want me to do, I'll do."
