Orioles announce Gausman will start spring home opener

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Orioles manager Buck Showalter named his pitchers for an intrasquad game at Ed Smith Stadium on Sunday. In addition, he said that right-hander Kevin Gausman would start the second game of the Grapefruit League season on Wednesday, at home against the Tigers.

Showalter had previously announced that Ubaldo Jimenez would get the opener against the Tigers on Tuesday in Lakeland, Fla.

Gausman said he expects to throw only the first inning.

"They start pretty slow here," Gausman said with a chuckle after Friday's workout. "There's no pitch count and I think he'll let me get through the inning. Hopefully, I won't have to be taken out after two outs."

Here's the lineup of pitchers for the intrasquad game:

For the away team, it's T.J. McFarland, Wesley Wright, Mike Wright, Jason Garcia, Logan Verrett and Hunter Harvey.

For the home team, it's Zach Britton, Ryan Webb, Mark Hendrickson, Tim Berry, Tyler Wilson and Chaz Roe.

Showalter said that nothing yet should be read into his spring rotation. He still hasn't selected the starter for Opening Day against the Rays at Tropicana Field on April 6.

"I think we'll have a pretty good idea a little over halfway through [Spring Training]," Showalter said. "We'll always build in some wiggle room there. Anybody saying that this far ahead right now is thinking that Mother Nature is going to be very good to them. We might get a four-day storm. It reaches a point, a date, when we kind of have to show your hand. So you won't be able to tell until I want you to tell."
