Rays have some worthy All-Star candidates

The Rays do not have any players among the American League's top All-Star vote-getters, thus the ultimate choice of which Tampa Bay player will be on the squad will belong to Red Sox manager Terry Francona.

The competition in the Devil Rays' clubhouse for that spot is going to be close.

Asked about candidates from his team, manager Lou Piniella listed catcher Toby Hall, outfielder Carl Crawford and infielder Jorge Cantu.

"Toby's been very consistent, Cantu is really hitting the ball and C.C. is coming on," said Piniella. "But Toby, from the start of the season to now, he's been very consistent. He's been hitting around .300 all year, and he's done a real nice job with our pitchers."

Crawford leads the team in RBIs, and Cantu is the team's home run leader with nine.

Fans can vote online or at Tropicana Field until June 26.
