The Phillies have invited eight alumni to participate in spring training as guest instructors, the club announced today. Together, the group of former players combined for 29 All-Star selections, 11 Gold Gloves, six Silver Slugger Awards, three MVP Awards and two Cy Youngs.
Manager Ryne Sandberg and his coaching staff will intermittently be assisted by Larry Andersen, Roy Halladay, Dave Hollins, Greg Luzinski, Charlie Manuel, Dan Plesac, Aaron Rowand and Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt. That group represents the 1980 World Champions, the 1983 National League Champions, the 1993 NL Champions, the 2008 World Champions and the 2009 NL Champions.
Andersen, Halladay, Hollins, Luzinski, Manuel and Schmidt have assisted in past spring training camps while 2015 will mark the first time Plesac and Rowand are back in a Phillies uniform.
"One of the things that makes spring training such a great time of year is that it affords teams the opportunity to dip into their past and bring back people that had an impact on their respective organizations," said Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. "We are thrilled with the group of guys we were able to assemble and that their schedules will allow them to spend time with our players and impart their knowledge."
The remaining members of the spring training instructional staff are the major league coaching staff of Larry Bowa (bench), Steve Henderson (hitting), Pete Mackanin (third base), Bob McClure (pitching), John Mizerock (assistant hitting), Rod Nichols (bullpen), Juan Samuel (first base) and Jesus Tiamo (bullpen catcher); the triple-A staff of Dave Brundage (manager), Mickey Morandini (coach), Sal Rende (coach) and Ray Burris (pitching coach); the minor league coordinators of Andy Abad (outfield/baserunning), Rafael Chaves (pitching), Doug Mansolino (field), Andy Tracy (hitting), Chris Truby (infield) and Ernie Whitt (catching); and player development staff members Carlos Arroyo and Jorge Velandia.
The first workout for pitchers and catchers at the Phillies' spring training complex in Clearwater, Fla., is scheduled for February 19 with full-squad workouts slated to begin on February 24.
