Second baseman Luis Castillo was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right heel on Friday by the Mets, who also designated outfielder Gary Matthews, Jr. for assignment.

To take the places of the two veterans on the active 25-man roster, the Mets recalled infielder Ruben Tejada from Triple-A Buffalo and catcher Omir Santos from Double-A Birmingham.

Castillo's disablement followed an MRI on his sore heel Thursday at New York's Hospital for Special Surgery, which was negative. He is hitting .241 with a .347 on-base percentage in 44 games with the Mets.

In 36 games following his acquisition from the Los Angeles Angels in a January trade for Brian Stokes, Matthews batted .190 with one RBI.

Tejada, who had been on the Mets' Opening Day roster and was hitting .294 with the Bisons, and Santos, one of the club's top rookie surprises when he batted .260 last season, will both be in uniform for Friday night's game against the Marlins.
