HOUSTON, TX - Beginning tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT, fans will have the opportunity to vote online for Astros All-Star Jose Altuve in Round 1 of MLB Network's annual "Face of MLB" contest. Online voting, which concludes on Friday at 8 a.m. CT, can be conducted at mlb.com/faceofmlb, on Twitter by tweeting #JoseAltuve and #FaceOfMLB within the same tweet, and posting #JoseAltuve and #FaceOfMLB in the comments section on MLB Network's Facebook page.
In the contest, a player from each club is pitted against a player from an opposing club in each round. In Round 1, Altuve will face A's relief pitcher Sean Doolittle. Players receiving the most votes will advance to the next round. There are four rounds leading up to the final round when two players remain.
In last year's Face of MLB contest, Altuve defeated Cardinals All-Star Yadier Molina in Round 1 before being eliminated by Giants All-Star Buster Posey in the second round.
In 2014, Altuve had one of the finest seasons in Astros history as well as one of the most productive seasons by any second baseman in the history of Major League Baseball. Altuve led the Majors in batting with a .341 average, becoming the first Houston player ever to win a batting crown. He also led the Majors with 225 hits, which is a club record, and led the AL with 56 stolen bases. In the process, he became just the third player since 1945 to lead his league in batting, hits and stolen bases. The other two were IF Snuffy Stirnweiss in 1945 and OF Ichiro Suzuki in 2001.
