Hunter leads Twins on All-Star ballot

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins center fielder Torii Hunter enjoyed one of the best games of his career this past week. Will it help boost his chances to start in the 76th All-Star Game at Detroit?

Hunter, a four-time Gold Glove winner and the last Minnesota player to start in an All-Star game in 2002, went 5-for-5 with six RBIs on June 1, and he was the key behind the Twins' win against the Indians at the Metrodome.

However, the 29-year-old Hunter will need a better boost from Twins fans, because he's ranked eighth among American League outfielders in voting with 296,150 votes.

Also on the AL outfield leaderboard, Jacque Jones is in 14th place with 110,101 votes.

Catcher and Twin Cities native Joe Mauer remains in fifth place in balloting for catchers with 139,352 votes.

Fan voting will determine starting position players for the 2005 All-Star Game on July 12 at Detroit's Comerica Park. Voters online can cast their votes up to 25 times in the Ameriquest All-Star Online Ballot, which is available exclusively at MLB.com and all 30 of the club sites. Paper ballots also are being punched at each Major League ballpark.

Online balloting ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on June 30.
