PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and D-backs legend Luis Gonzalez raised $95,000 on Saturday at the inaugural Luis Gonzalez Celebrity Hitting Challenge, presented by Firetrace. The funds will benefit non-profit charities that support first responders and their families.
The event was held at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick and featured four stations, including a home run derby, defensive skill challenge, police and fire obstacle course and a hitting challenge sponsored by Safelite, Audi, Budweiser, APS and the D-backs. The 100 Club of Arizona, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Phoenix Fire Department and Phoenix Police Department supplied vehicles for display, items for the obstacle course and a K-9 bite demonstration before the event.
Each team was paired with a celebrity coach, including Luis Gonzalez, Augie Ojeda, Reggie Sanders and Brandon Webb. Nearly half of the participants included first responders from around the Valley. All participants walked away with a gift and were treated to a lunch and an after party that included a custom trophy for the top overall team and top three individuals in the hitting challenge.
