ST. LOUIS -- As manager Tony La Russa held his customary pregame briefing with reporters on Tuesday, his attention was somewhat divided. While answering questions, he was also exchanging text messages with hitting coach Mark McGwire.
That's because McGwire's wife Stephanie gave birth to three baby girls on Tuesday. The girls have not been named yet, but La Russa said that McGwire told him that mother and babies are all doing well.
"Just got a text," La Russa said. "She delivered all three of them. Names to be determined in 24 hours or so. Amazing."
La Russa did not say when McGwire would rejoin the team, but it is unlikely to be before Thursday's off-day. The Cardinals open a series with the Brewers on Friday.
