Barnes claimed by Blue Jays; Rowen a free agent

Former Rangers left-hander Scott Barnes was claimed on waivers by the Blue Jays on Tuesday, while right-hander Ben Rowen cleared waivers and is now a free agent.

Texas, which has a full 40-man roster, designated both for assignment on Dec. 16.

Barnes was claimed on waivers from the Orioles on Dec. 8 after being designated for assignment by the Indians on Nov. 23 and purchased by the Orioles on Nov. 26. He was 3-2 with a 3.68 ERA in 25 appearances (one start) for Cleveland's Triple-A affiliate in 2014.

Rowen made his Major League debut for the Rangers in 2014, making eight relief appearances. He allowed four runs in 8 2/3 innings in the Majors from June 11-July 3 before finishing the season at Triple-A Round Rock, where he posted a 3.45 ERA in 34 relief appearances.
