Royals trade Giavotella to Angels for righty Broderick

The Royals have traded infielder Johnny Giavotella, who was designated for assignment on Thursday, to the Angels for right-hander Brian Broderick.

Broderick is a non-roster acquisition who will not count against the Royals' 40-man roster.

Broderick, 28, signed a free-agent deal with the Angels on Nov. 28 after spending the 2014 season with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Independent Atlantic League. He he made 60 relief appearances, going 0-2 with a 2.31 ERA in 62 1/3 innings, walking nine batters and striking out 65.

The former St. Louis Draft pick, who spent seven seasons in the Cards' and Nationals' organizations, made 11 appearances with Washington in 2011.
