D-backs acquire Rubby De La Rosa, Webster and Flores from Red Sox for Miley

Club designates Eury De la Rosa for assignment and also acquires Smith from Red Sox for Spruill

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) acquired right-handed pitchers Allen Webster (@11webster11) and Rubby De La Rosa (@RubbyDelarosa) and infielder Raymel Flores (@flores2546) from the Boston Red Sox for left-handed pitcher Wade Miley, as announced by D-backs Senior Vice President & General Manager Dave Stewart. 

In a corresponding move, the D-backs designated left-handed pitcher Eury De la Rosa for assignment. In a separate transaction, the D-backs acquired right-handed pitcher Myles Smith from the Red Sox for right-handed pitcher Zeke Spruill.

Entering the 2014 season, De La Rosa was the Red Sox' ninth-best player 25-and-Under per Baseball America. Webster was rated as the Red Sox' fourth-best prospect, the fourth-best player 25-and-Under and as having the Best Slider according to Baseball America. 

De La Rosa, 25, had his most extensive big league work last season with the Red Sox, his fourth in the Majors. In 19 games (18 starts), he went 4-8 with a 4.43 ERA (50 ER in 101.2 IP) and 74 strikeouts. In his first 11 starts, he went 4-4 with 7 quality starts, a 3.21 ERA (24 ER in 67.1 IP), a .259 opponent average and 48 strikeouts.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder has made 28 career starts and is 7-13 with a 4.28 ERA (74 ER in 155.2 IP) and 125 strikeouts. He has worked 5.0-plus innings with 3 earned runs or less in 17 of his 28 starts, going 7-4 with a 2.23 ERA (26 ER in 105.0 IP) in those contests. In 14 career outings (9 starts) against the National League, he is 4-3 with a 3.58 ERA (22 ER in 55.1 IP), a .228 opponents average and 53 strikeouts.

De La Rosa has pitched in 44 games (28 starts) over parts of 4 Major League seasons with the Red Sox (2013-14) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-12) and compiled an 8-15 record with a 4.34 ERA (84 ER in 174.1 IP) and 140 strikeouts. He was acquired by the Red Sox from the Dodgers on October 4, 2012, to complete a 9-player trade from August 25, which included Webster. De La Rosa was signed by the Dodgers as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2007.

Webster, 24, went 5-3 with a 5.03 ERA (33 ER in 59.0 IP) and 36 strikeouts in 11 starts for the Red Sox last season. He worked at least 5.0 innings in 8 starts and allowed 3 runs or less in 6 of those outings. In 21 games (20 starts) for Triple-A Pawtucket, he went 4-4 with 1 save, a 3.10 ERA (42 ER in 122.0 IP), a .234 opponents average and 100 strikeouts. He held lefties to a .223 average with 46 strikeouts while righties hit .247 with 54 strikeouts.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder appeared in 19 games (18 starts) in 2 seasons with the Red Sox (2013-14) and went 6-5 with a 6.25 ERA (62 ER in 89.1 IP) with 59 strikeouts. Over parts of 2 seasons at Pawtucket (2013-14), he was 12-8 with a 3.33 ERA (84 ER in 227.0 IP) and 216 strikeouts. He was acquired by the Red Sox from the Dodgers in a 9-player trade on August 25, 2012, which later included De La Rosa. Webster was the Dodgers' 18th-round pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

Flores, 20, hit .282 (58-for-206) with 6 doubles, 3 triples, 1 home run, 12 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 61 games with Short-Season A Lowell in 2014. The switch-hitting infielder, who played 47 games at second base and 11 at shortstop, batted .338 (25-for-74) over his final 22 contests.

In 3 Minor League seasons in the Red Sox' organization (2012-14), the Dominican Republic native hit .246 (118-for-479) with 14 doubles, 15 triples, 1 home run, 43 RBI and 28 stolen bases in 148 games. Flores was signed by Boston as a non-drafted free agent on July 9, 2011, and was cited by Baseball America as the Red Sox' top amateur international signing that year.

Smith, 22, appeared in 26 games (12 starts) last season at Single-A Greenville and went 5-10 with 1 save, a 5.82 ERA (67 ER in 103.2 IP) and 73 strikeouts. In 14 relief appearances, he went 1-5 with 1 save, a 5.63 ERA (30 ER in 48.0 IP) and 38 strikeouts. In 12 starts, he went 4-5 with a 5.98 ERA (37 ER in 55.2 IP) and 35 strikeouts. 

In 2 seasons with a trio of Red Sox' affiliates - Greenville (2014), Short-Season A Lowell (2013) and Rookie-Level Gulf Coast League Red Sox (2013) - he pitched in 31 games (17 starts) and went 5-10 with 1 save, a 5.43 ERA (69 ER in 114.1 IP) and 85 strikeouts. Smith was the Red Sox fourth-round pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.

Miley, 28, was an All-Star in 2012 and went on to finish second in BBWAA NL Rookie of the Year balloting. Over 4 seasons with the D-backs (2011-14), he went 38-35 with a 3.79 ERA (269 ER in 638.2 IP) and 499 strikeouts.

Eury De la Rosa, 24, went 2-1 with a 4.21 ERA (24 ER in 51.1 IP) in 44 games over 2 seasons with the D-backs (2013-14).

Spruill, 25, played 2 seasons with the D-backs and went 1-3 with a 4.24 ERA (16 ER in 34.0 IP) in 12 games (3 starts).
