Rockies swap Rule 5 pick for Minor Leaguer

SAN DIEGO -- The Rockies added Minor League right-handed pitching depth by acquiring reliever Austin House from the Athletics at the end of the Rule 5 Draft on Wednesday morning.

To acquire House, the Rockies selected first baseman Mark Canha with the second overall pick in the Rule 5 Draft and then traded Canha to the A's. In other Rockies Rule 5 action in the Major League phase, the Cubs took infielder Taylor Featherston seventh overall and traded him to the Angels, and the Braves took right-handed pitcher Daniel Winkler -- who was under consideration for a Major League callup before he underwent Tommy John surgery in June -- 11th overall.

House, who turns 24 on Jan. 24, pitched collegiately at the University of New Mexico. He spent most of last season with Class A Advanced Stockton (3-4, 3.46 ERA, 79 strikeouts and 19 walks in 54 2/3 innings) and made four scoreless appearances covering seven innings at Triple-A Sacramento. The A's showcased House in the Arizona Fall League, where he had a 4.76 ERA in 11 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts and seven walks and didn't figure in any decisions.

Featherston batted .260 with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs at Double-A Tulsa last season. If he does not stay on the Angels' 25-man roster throughout the 2015 season, he must be offered to the Rockies for $25,000 -- half the fee that was paid to make the pick.

The Rule 5 situation to watch is Winkler, who was 5-2 with a 1.41 ERA in 12 starts before suffering the elbow injury that led the Rockies to leave him unprotected. The Braves may keep Winkler on the disabled list for the entire 2015 season, but he will have to be on the active roster for 90 days in 2016 or else be offered back to the Rockies for $25,000.
