Bucs acquire infielder Rodriguez from Rays

The Pirates acquired infielder Sean Rodriguez from the Rays on Monday in exchange for a player to be named and cash. First baseman Gaby Sanchez was designated for assignment to make room for the versatile infielder on Pittsburgh's 40-man roster.

Rodriguez, 29, played all over the diamond for Tampa Bay last season, making 23 appearances (14 starts) at second base, 18 appearances (14 starts) at first, 17 appearances (12 starts) in left field, nine appearances (seven starts) at third, two appearances in right and one start at shortstop. He was designated for assignment in late November.

Rodriguez hit .211 with 13 doubles and a career-high 12 home runs in 96 games in 2014, and he is a career .225 hitter with the Angels (2008-09) and Rays (2010-14).
