Following the previous season's tie, the league announced that starting with the 2003 game, the Midsummer Classic would decide home-field advantage for the World Series. The AL rallied from a 5-1 deficit to win the inaugural game of this kind, thanks in large part to MVP Garret Anderson. Anderson, who had won the Home Run Derby one day earlier, went deep and finished a triple shy of the cycle in the AL's 7-6 victory, also winning MVP honors.
