While many standout players were unavailable due to the war effort, Cardinals slugger Stan Musial started his streak of 24 consecutive All-Star Game appearances and drove in a run in the first inning. The Yankees' Joe McCarthy managed the American League but controversially held out the five Yankees on the team after being publicly accused of being partial to the Bronx Bombers leading up to the game, which was the first All-Star Game held at night.
