Last year, Carlos Ruiz was traded away from the Phillies -- the team he'd spent his entire baseball life with. Philly fans were sad, expressing their gratitude on Twitter, while Chooch, hurrying off to Los Angeles, could only scrawl a goodbye note on the visitors' clubhouse whiteboard:
He ended up buying up some Philadelphia billboard space as well. But finally, on Tuesday, the now-Mariners backup catcher was back in town to face the Phillies for a three-game series. Before the game, Ruiz talked to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki about coming back to Citizens Bank Park:
Ruiz didn't start the game, but he did get a warm, standing ovation in the third inning when a tribute video was played on the Jumbotron.
He also pinch-hit to a round of applause in the eighth, with current Phillies catcher Cameron Rupp joining in:
The sounds of "Chooooooch" could probably be heard within five miles of the stadium.
