Hopefully you were paying attention to the Arizona Fall League on Saturday. Not only was it the championship game between the Scottsdale Scorpions and the Surprise Saguaros, but it was also the final professional game to be played within the Continental United States until next spring (because there are still the Winter Leagues in Australia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Dominican Republic). And just like the end of a holiday sale, there was a motley collection of defensive highlights on display.
With two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and knowing that this would be the final out before we entered baseball-free hibernation for the winter, Giants prospect Christian Arroyo made sure to send us out on a high note. With the Scorpions leading, 6-4, Cardinals infield prospect Aledmys Diaz popped up a ball foul down the third-base line.
With that, the Scorpions were champions and Arroyo could celebrate. And now we're left with a 2015 season to look back and smile on as we desperately wait for winter to end.
